The tiger is a crepuscular animal and is active after dusk\u00a0 and before sunrise.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Local people saw him &#8230; WAS HE ALONE? Or did his mate and the young ones follow him? Did he\u00a0 roar?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The tiger is the largest of big cats so when the local people reported seeing a big animal like a tiger the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forest officials thought they had seen a leopard. The attacks on buffaloes and other big domestic <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">animals forced the forest department to believe the presence of a tiger in the odd land. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It started being noticed in Uttarakhand since 2016 but despite decisions to study the high altitude\u00a0 tigers by <\/span><b>Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradoon, assessing the significance of the animal at such a\u00a0 height, we haven\u2019t any conclusions<\/b><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-50ebb81 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default elementor-invisible\" data-id=\"50ebb81\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-settings=\"{&quot;animation&quot;:&quot;fadeInDown&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-7de5fb1\" data-id=\"7de5fb1\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c5a9989 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c5a9989\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4><span style=\"color: #d62727;\">&#8220;Where, when the sun is melting in his heat,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #d62727;\">The reeking tygers find a cool retreat;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #d62727;\">Bask in the sedges, lose the sultry beam<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #d62727;\">And wanton with their shadows in the stream.&#8221;<\/span> A very old poem<\/h4>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-d888ad1 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"d888ad1\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-fe5fa53\" data-id=\"fe5fa53\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4b2513a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4b2513a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Forest officials sighted a royal Bengal tiger at an unusually high altitude of above 12,000 feet in the\u00a0 Indian Himalayas. The ecologists concluded that this was another disturbing instance of climate\u00a0 change.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>About 5 doz camera traps were installed in different parts of fixed on different parts of the Kedarnath\u00a0 Wildlife Sanctuary. The photograph of a tiger moving in Madhmaheshwar (also in the Kedarnath\u00a0 wildlife Sanctuar) area is the most prized of all.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>A tiger heading towards the snowbound area has surprised the forest officials.\u00a0 The camera trap captured the endangered musk deer, bear, fox and other animals. The snap of the tiger, taken at an altitude of 3400 mt is rare. The development has certainly provided wildlife\u00a0 scientists a new issue for research.\u00a0<\/p><p>The staff of the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary, located in Chamoli and Rudraprayag districts in\u00a0 Uttarakhand, are thrilled with the recently obtained camera trap pictures.<\/p><p>And the Kedarnath Sanctuary showed one was even spotted just at the \u201cModi cave\u201d\u00a0 In 2016, the Uttarakhand Forest Department documented a tiger roaming at 10,740 feet in the Askot\u00a0 landscape of Uttarakhand- making it the highest elevation record for tiger in India.\u00a0 A tiger was seen in a picture shot from a camera fixed in Askot Wildlife Sanctuary in March 2016. The\u00a0 tiger lives at a height of 3,000-4,000 feet\u2014being spotted in the upper ranges of Uttarakhand, will add\u00a0 to the tenacious animal\u201fs ability to find a home for itself in diverse lands.\u00a0<\/p><p>There used to be so many types of tigers in the world, some have gone extinct. The Caspian tiger\u00a0 which roamed Australia is extinct and not from prehistoric times but in the last few centuries.\u00a0 These remarkable cats have adapted to thrive in these variable environments in different corners of\u00a0 throughout Asia\u2014from muddy mangrove swamps (the Sunderbans) in India to crisp temperate\u00a0 forests in the Russian Far East \u2014 there were once at least 100,000 tigers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>Today maybe only 3,500 of these endangered animals remain, in India, southeast Asia, and Russia,\u00a0 where their survival is continually threatened by poaching and habitat loss.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>Putin is doing everything to save his Siberian Tigers. About that and the Siberian Tigress Juzya he\u00a0 rewilded later.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>In Southeast Asia, for example, the complex coat pattern helps Sumatran tigers blend in with the\u00a0 dense lattices of tropical vegetation as they stalk their prey. To go through the narrow forest paths,\u00a0 they are smaller in size.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>The Amur (or Siberian) tigers grow thicker coats than their Asian counterparts. Here, in winter\u00a0 conditions drive other big carnivores like the brown bear to hibernate, while tigers push through\u00a0 chest-deep snow to search for prey in temperatures that reach the minus forties. They sometimes cut\u00a0 their soft foot pads on coarse ice and leave drops of blood in their snowy tracks as they walk.\u00a0 The Siberians have thick auburn fur to camouflage them among the autumn oak leaves. Tigers persist\u00a0 and evolve over time by grabbing advantages from wherever destiny takes them.\u00a0 Tigers are amongst one of the most resilient species, dominating varying landscapes-from hot and\u00a0 humid jungles, to tropical grasslands to temperate forests, alpine woodlands to mangroves\u2026or low\u00a0 pressure oxygen, frosty mountains.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>Usually, it is other big cats, like snow leopards, that are found above 12,000 feet.\u00a0 Unfortunately they don\u201ft have ways to deal with the most evolved and clever animal: man, whose\u00a0 fear and awe for them has pitted them against the TIGER. Hopefully the tigers\u201f survival instincts, and\u00a0 dedicated conservationists, will ensure tigers remain for future generations to see the apex animal at\u00a0 the top of the food pyramid.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>Famous for their musk deer population and conservation, Askot and Kedarnath National Parks are\u00a0 home to leopard, jungle cat, civet, barking deer and brown bear besides the antelope-like serow and\u00a0 goral among other mammals.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-ea2daac elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" and Kedarnath both musk deer\u00a0 sanctuaries and I\u201fm so scared he will either hurt my darling grey ghosts, the snow leopards or drive\u00a0 them back to Mongolia.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>Or the new inhabitants may get a taste of the endangered musk deer (the Uttarakhand State Animal)<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section Nepal\u201d, across the four Indian states of Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Bengal, and Arunachal Pradesh.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>Jointly implemented by the Global Tiger Forum (GTF), National Tiger Conservation Authority of\u00a0 India (NTCA), the State Forest Departments of four selected states, and Wildlife Institute of India\u00a0 (WII) the project involved carrying out surveys to assess the status and presence of tigers and other\u00a0 mammals in high altitudinal areas.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>This involved interviews with herders and other knowledgeable individuals from the local \u00a0communities, conducting sign surveys to detect wildlife presence and deploying camera traps to \u00a0capture some of the most elusive species living in the mountains.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>There is this beautiful account of the WWF India team Tiger, of Pranav\u201fs deploying camera traps in \u00a0grids that fall within the Kedarnath Musk Deer Sanctuary, all the way from Lohva Range (approx. \u00a01400 feet) to Madhmaheshwar Range (approx. 13,000 feet). <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-80d3562 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"80d3562\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-ca4a92f\" data-id=\"ca4a92f\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-46fe2d4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"46fe2d4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Walking through the frosty alpine meadows amidst the Oaks and Rhododendrons, spotting \u00a0Himalayan monals and Koklass pheasants rushing through bugyals (alpine meadows of Himalayas) \u00a0to seeing a strong herd of Himalayan tahrs moving through the Rhododendron forests.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>From curious gorals to shy Musk deers and rarely seen Himalayan serow, as the team gained height the surroundings became serene, and the habitat grew diverse. The vast, green bugyals which tend to \u00a0the nutritional needs of gorals and tahrs, became camping grounds for the team under the starry \u00a0nights.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>Braving average temperatures of less than 5\u00b0C and incessant snowfall, the team keeps hiking further \u00a0up the mountains, loaded with backpacks, camera traps, and batteries. As they reach closer to the \u00a0ridge, they are greeted by torrential downpours &amp;strong icy winds, lashing against their exhausted \u00a0bodies.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>\u201cThe occurrence of tigers in the Himalayas is not a new one- these mountains have been connected \u00a0with the Terai forests since time immemorial, and the species has ranged widely. Expansive forests, \u00a0diverse prey base and low anthropocentric pressure in these areas make it a viable habitat for the \u00a0tigers to grow and survive\u201dsays Dr. Pranav Chanchani, National Lead for Tiger Conservation at WWF \u00a0India.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>\u201cThe results acquired through these extensive surveys across the Himalayas, will provide us with an \u00a0improved understanding of the habitats these big cats inhabit and also how the tigers are moving in \u00a0High Altitude Landscapes,\u201d says Mr. Nishant Verma, DIGF, NTCA. \u201cThis will also allow us to come \u00a0up with concerted management interventions for the conservation of the species.\u201d They decided to break their trek here- the coordinates on their GPS told them they had reached yhe place. After \u00a0exploring around for a while, a suitable spot was found and two camera traps were deployed- in a hope to find \u00a0the presence or at the very least credible evidence of the existence of an apex predator in these hostile \u00a0surroundings- the Royal Bengal tiger.\u00a0<\/p><p>After 42 days of survey and deployment, the team was back from their high altitude survey in \u00a0Kedarnath- hopeful and motivated. As the team sat in their field office in Dehradun, sifting through \u00a0thousands of camera trap images, they were reminded of the forest staff from Kedarnath Musk Deer \u00a0Sanctuary : Patrolling such vast areas of wilderness, against the weather-beaten conditions, in order \u00a0to conserve the flora and fauna of Uttarakhand- is a feat and a reminder of the tedious efforts these \u00a0Foresters make on a day-to-day basis. \u00a0<\/p><p>Preliminary data showed the distribution of a diverse assemblage of mammals including the Himalayan tahr, \u00a0Musk deer, Sambar and Himalayan black bears at almost 12,000 feet above sea level and then the moment of \u00a0reckoning: Later, halfway through the sifting process, the team comes across an image taken in the middle of \u00a0the night- a young male tiger is caught walking through the frosty alpine meadows amidst the Oaks and \u00a0Rhododendrons, just shy of the tree line at 13,000 feet above the mean sea
